Direct Instruction Focus

The Professional Development Department has put together a teaching/learning tool related to Direct Instruction for administrators, teachers and instructional aides. The tool describes teacher actions and student actions that provide evidence of each of the 8 Direct Instruction Strategies that lead to increased student learning.

A number of principals have requested that as a district we focus attention on one DI strategy per month. They indicated that they would introduce/practice/reinforce (as the case may be) that strategy with their staffs. You will find that we begin with a September Focus, "Knowledge objectives are clearly and explicitly stated for every exercise for both teacher and students." There is a strategy identified for each month through April, please see the document below for details on each month.

Our district goal is to see all 8 strategies employed in every classroom continually, and that is happening in many classrooms right now. Formal DI training has not been provided to all staff as we are still trying to catch up to need. Martinrex and his team will work with you in scheduling formal training, but in the meantime, these monthly focus sheets are a great learning/discussion tool. There are many programs similar to Direct Instruction in which you or your staff may have been trained. A great discussion could center in the similarities in teaching stategies/terminology in Direct Instruction and another program they already know. Another good discussion would be in connecting the DI strategies to the California Standards to the Teaching Profession, upon which our teacher evaluations are based.

Intel Essentials Course

The Intel Essentials Course was a complete success. All the participating teachers learned a great deal and are taking inspiration back to their classrooms. If you missed it this year, be sure to check out the calendar to find out when the next course is being offered.

Read more on the Intel Essentials page to find out what the course offers and even view some sample work from the course.
